Cleveland Browns: 3-Step blueprint to Week 2 victory over Jets
By Randy Gurzi
2. Win the line of scrimmage on offense
We already touched on the penalty that sent Greg Robinson to the locker room in Week 1. With him gone, they had to turn to Kendall Lamm, but then he was hurt late in the second quarter on a play that ended with Baker Mayfield on the ground in their own end zone.
Worse than giving up the two points was the fact that they had to move right tackle Chris Hubbard to the opposite side and bring in Justin McCray to play right tackle.
McCray is not only a guard by trade but was also with the team for roughly one week before being thrust into action. That led to some ugly play as the Browns linemen couldn’t keep the pressure off Mayfield.
This wasn’t their only reason for losing but it was the main reason their offense was so out of rhythm. With Mayfield never able to set his feet and read the field, the offense couldn’t move the chains consistently and the defense spent too much time on the field.
That can’t happen in Week 2. The Jets, like the Titans, have an underrated defense and they can get after the quarterback. In their Week 1 loss to the Bills, they were able to record three sacks on Josh Allen and leveled him with a few more hits as he was releasing the ball.
Cleveland has to find a way to keep the Gregg Williams coached defense at bay if they want to find a way to win this one.
