Cleveland Browns News: Baker Mayfield already taking too many hits
By Dan Justik
The Daily Dawg Tags brings you all the Cleveland Browns news you need to know, including Baker Mayfield taking too many hits already.
The Cleveland Browns offense has sputtered during the first two weeks of the 2019 season, which is not what was expected of the unit. Baker Mayfield has also looked like a different quarterback compared to last year, as he has not been sharp to start the season.
In the first two games of 2019, Mayfield has not looked too comfortable in the pocket and has been holding onto the ball much longer than he should. This has caused pressure to get in his face, even if the offensive line is giving time for Mayfield to throw.
Mayfield’s performance in 2019 is a far cry of what he looked like last season when he was getting the ball out of his hands quickly. And the longer Mayfield holds onto the ball, the more opportunities for him to take hits and get injured.

Freddie Kitchens on Baker Mayfield: ‘He’s taking too many hits’ – Mary Kay Cabot, Cleveland.com
"This season, Mayfield has already been sacked eight times and hit 13, including three sacks in Monday’s 23-3 victory over the Jets. At that clip, he’d be sacked 64 times this year — two shy of the season record for Browns quarterbacks."
A big reason why the Freddie Kitchens offense thrived during the second half of 2018 was because Mayfield was schemed to get the ball out quickly. That has not been the case in 2019, and it is causing Mayfield to get hit, as well as take the offense out of rhythm.
What are the Browns options for third-string quarterback?
The Cleveland Browns announced Monday they had placed Drew Stanton on injured reserve, ending his season. Now that Garrett Gilbert is the backup quarterback, Elliot Kennel looked at potential options to be Cleveland’s third-string quarterback.
Baker Mayfield and the new world of expectations in Cleveland – Ian O’Connor, ESPN
"“He’s the real deal. He has the physical skills, but more than the physical skills he has a great attitude toward his position, toward his responsibility. … He’s the first quarterback I’ve seen the Browns come up with that I really believe can truly do the job.”"
Because it is clear Baker Mayfield and the Browns roster has plenty of talent, now there are always going to be expectations for the team to win. Even if they say they are blocking out the outside noise, at some point the Browns players will know there is a lot of pressure on them to win, and to win right away.
Browns snatching victory from the jaws of victory
Despite beating the New York Jets by 20 points, most fans were disappointed with how the Browns performed, even though they won. But as Casey Kinnamon points out, fans should celebrate the win considering the team has lost those types of games several times in the past.
