After two underwhelming performances, are the Cleveland Browns who we thought they were or will this version of the Browns turn over a new leaf?

The Cleveland Browns are 1-1 and their performances this season have been underwhelming. The offseason addition of Odell Beckham Jr., Olivier Vernon, Kareem Hunt, and others had expectations higher than almost any other season since the Browns returned to the city in 1999.

The Browns have been the tale of two franchises. The first of which had the likes of Jim Brown, Otto Graham, and eight NFL and All-America Football championships. But since their return in 1999, the Browns are 96-225-1. That’s a far cry from the historic franchise we used to know.

The notion that the Browns, “are who we thought they were,” as Tennessee Titans tight end, Delanie Walker stated after the Titans 43-13 throttling of the Browns in Week 1. His comments were close to how some of the Browns fans were feeling after a disappointing performance.

After starting the season 2-5-1 last year, they finished the season 5-3 when head coach Freddie Kitchens became interim offensive coordinator.

According to Sharpfootballstats.com, the Browns ran 11 personnel (three wide receivers) 54.8 percent of the time after Kitchens took over play-calling duties during the final eight games. So far this year the Browns are in 11 personnel 77.5 percent of the time.

Being in more 11 personnel sets has led to more pressure on Baker Mayfield. During the final eight games, last season Mayfield was sacked only five times. So far this season, eight times in two games.

Kitchens and Mayfield attempted to take the blame during this week’s press conferences. Kitchens said his play calling needs to improve, and Mayfield said he has to take check-downs more to get the ball to his playmakers sooner.

The Browns’ franchise has been the tale of two franchises, and through ten games, this Kitchens offense has been the tale of two offenses. When the Browns figure out who they are, is when we’ll know if they are who we thought they were or team that can fill the lofty expectations.
