The Cleveland Browns ‘bread and butter’ run play for 2019
By Mitch Zoloty
The Cleveland Browns offensive line and Nick Chubb helped lead the team with an impressive showing in their run game against the Baltimore Ravens. Specifically one run scheme helped lead the Browns to victory.
Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb had a career game against the Baltimore Ravens, racking up 20 carries for 165 yards and three touchdowns. Five of those 20 carries, one-fourth of his total carries for those math wizards out there, came on a run play called “pin and pull“.
The whole idea behind this run scheme is pulling your center and one of the play-side offensive lineman and getting the football out on the perimeter with your running back. The center usually pulls for the Mike linebacker and the other play-side offensive lineman pulls for the next defensive player outside of the Mike.
The Browns ran this scheme five times against the Ravens, having J.C. Tretter and a play-side offensive guard pull every time, so this could be something the team runs versus over-fronts only.

On the five times Chubb and the Cleveland Browns ran pin and pull, they racked up 111 yards and a touchdown. These runs went for six yards carry, 17 yards, 88 yards, a loss of one yard, and one yard. You can bask in the glory of Chubb’s 88-yard touchdown run by watching it again and hear Ravens head coach John Harbaugh talk about it.
Looking at the tendencies when the Browns ran pin and pull, they ran it four times on a first down and once on a second down. The one yard loss and one yard carry were back-to-back in the fourth quarter after the Browns pretty much clinched the game, so take those results with a grain of salt. The Ravens were playing the run heavy on those downs.
Evaluating the other three runs, it showed how effective Tretter can be in space and showed his value to this team. Eric Kush got the nod to pull on three of the runs, as he was the play-side puller on the 88-yard rushing touchdown, the 17-yard gain, and the one-yard rush at the end of the 4th quarter.
This run play really seems to maximize Kush’s talents as a run blocker, as he seems to be effective in space. Joel Bitonio also got the nod to pull on two of these plays, as he pulled on the six-yard rush and the loss of one-yard rush.
In all, fans should expect to see this play ran more often throughout the season. Freddie Kitchens seems to have found the key run play for big plays for this Browns offense, as the Ravens defense was no joke of a unit.
The Ravens defense is a talented unit who will try to be more prepared for the play when the teams meet up in Cleveland this season, but hopefully the offense will be able to strike the same success in that game too.
