Special Teams: A-

Things started well for the special teams unit. Dontrell Hillard took the opening kickoff 74-yards to set up the opening drive touchdown. On the second return, he took it 28-yards, setting up a shorter than normal field that led to a score.

But even though the special team units had been nothing short of amazing through the first five games. This was one of the first games in which they showed chinks in the armor. On a windy day, Austin Siebert missed an extra point his second of the year.

In the second quarter, they allowed a free runner right up the middle to block a punt that would lead to a Seattle field goal. Later in the game, the AFC special teams player of the month, the Scottish Hammer, boomed a 70-yard punt to flip field position when the game was hovering on the brink of getting out of hand.

The special teams units did enough to win the game, and that’s all that matters, but missed extra points and blocked punts are a sure-fire way to play yourself into losses later in the year. Overall this unit has played well and will look to continue their stellar play after the bye week.
