Myles Garrett wants defense to get back to being comfortable
By Leon West
The Cleveland Browns defense had been playing well, but after a poor performance against the San Francisco 49ers, Myles Garrett and company hope to get back to the basics against the Seattle Seahawks.
The Cleveland Browns defense was riding high after holding an explosive Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens well below their season averages. Cleveland wanted to roll that performance right over into Week 5, but instead allowed an 83-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game.
Things never got better for the defense of the Browns. They surrendered 275 yards of rushing to the 49ers while allowing seven yards per carry. Running backs, wide receivers, and even tight end George Kittle got in on the action. If there is one bright spot for the defense, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo managed only negative three yards on four carries.
After a performance like that, no one on the Browns can be happy. Garrett, the team’s defensive leader, and sack artist, wants to get back to doing what he does best. Garrett was asked what he can use this week that he used against Jackson:

"“I’m not going to play behind blocks like I did with Lamar. I felt like I was sitting behind, waiting, making sure he wasn’t escaping… I want to make sure I’m doing more rushing of him (Russell Wilson) than I am sitting and waiting.” — Garrett said via Marla Ridenour of The Beacon Journal"
Myles also understands that he cannot rush if they don’t figure out how to stop the run. When asked, how do you bounce back from Monday night’s bad performance after watching the film, Garrett responded:
"“Why were guys playing hesitant? Were we comfortable with the front? No. Ok, well, why not? It was something new. Let’s go back to what we were doing before. Something you were more comfortable with, something that allows you to play faster and more physical… the things that we’ve done in games that we’ve won don’t shy away from that… play your game.” — Garrett via Ridenour of The Beacon Journal"
The Browns hadn’t allowed a rusher to average more than five yards per carry through the first four weeks, but going up against the NFL top two rushing offenses that changed in a bad way for Cleveland. The Ravens had two rushers average over five yards per rush while the 49ers had four over that total.
The Browns’ defense is capable of much more. Myles knows it. He’s seen it. The Seahawks could be without two of their starting offensive linemen as Duane Brown, and DJ Fluker are both listed as doubtful. This could be a blessing in disguise for the Browns defense, although Myles says its business as usual regardless of who plays.
Getting back to the basics and knowing what to do was a common theme during Garrett’s presser. He stated that if they are comfortable, they can beat anyone in the league due to the strength of their front four.
If the Browns defensive line can get back to being comfortable and playing fast and physical, they’ll have every opportunity to wreck the game against Seattle. Garrett will have to continue his Defensive Player of the Year level of play to stop Wilson and the Seahawks.
The AFC North hasn’t fared well against Wilson to this point sitting at 0-2, but he’s beaten the two opponents from the north by a combined three points. The Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers both accumulated four sacks to keep things close.
If Myles and the defense get back to the basic, they could put themselves in a position to do what no other AFC North team has done this season: beat the Seattle Seahawks.
