The Cleveland Browns and Baker Mayfield have a tough test Sunday afternoon against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. If they can find a way to win, it could signify a passing of a torch from one great quarterback to the next.

Tom Brady is no doubt a Hall of Fame quarterback. He checks all the boxes you look for: wins, championships, NFL records. Pair his play with the great mind of Bill Belichick and an all-time great defense so far this season, and it’s clear that the Cleveland Browns have a tough matchup when they lineup to play in week 8.

There’s always the talk of the Browns being the “same old Browns” and the Patriots “potentially having the pieces to go undefeated” that seems to come up every year, and this year is no different.

Cleveland came into the season with high expectations after acquiring talent, but have failed to turn it into wins through the first half of the season. Everyone is already writing them off in this game against the mighty Patriots.

But what if the Browns walk into Foxborough Stadium and beat the Patriots? If Baker Mayfield can beat this seemingly unbeatable defense run by the football genius, what does that do for Mayfield not only this season but for his career?

If that happens, it could have a huge effect on Mayfield. Remember the NFL 100 commercial that aired during Super Bown LIII that featured players from the past and present, and included Brady handing his Super Bowl rings to Mayfield and said: “Hold these” prior to running out to join the action in the ballroom? If Mayfield wins on Sunday, there could be a more figurative passing of such rings between the two.

As Brady (eventually) comes to the end of his illustrious career, Baker Mayfield is just getting started on what Cleveland fans hope will be a long career. While he has struggled with consistency this season, defeating Brady’s Patriots would be a huge step in the right direction for Mayfield’s legacy as well as for the Browns who are hoping to still make something out of this season that started with so much promise.

Mayfield winning may not earn him a ring this season, but it would prove that the Browns certainly made the right choice in 2018 making him the No. 1 overall selection in the draft. It validates that Mayfield has what it takes to make it in this league and that the Browns aren’t the same old Browns anymore.

It will take an incredible effort from everyone on Sunday to defeat the Patriots on Sunday afternoon, not just Mayfield. Should it happen, though, the league should be put on notice that Mayfield and the Browns are for real.

Mayfield would not only prove he’s worthy of wielding the torch of potentially the next great NFL quarterback like Brady, but with a much easier schedule in the second half, the Browns have a chance to make some real noise like they hoped they would before the season began.
