Cleveland Browns: Trent Williams and 3 other trades that would ensure AFC North title
By Leon West
Trent Williams, OT — Washington Redskins
Back to the offensive line. This is the most natural trade target in recent memory. Trent Williams has said he will not play another snap in the nation’s capital, and John Dorsey has heard it loud and clear. The Redskins have said for weeks that they have no plans to move on from the distraught veteran lineman.
Dorsey said in a pre-bye week presser that it takes two to tango when asked about Williams — although he wouldn’t use the player’s name due to the whole tampering law in the NFL. I’m sure he will not put down the phone until tomorrow’s deadline has come and gone. The cost for Williams will be high, but for a good reason.
Williams is a seven-time pro-bowler and a five-time all-pro. He has had some injury issues recently, but when healthy is one of the most dangerous and reliable left tackles in the entire NFL. Adding Williams to the offensive line would ironically be a welcome sight for Mayfield’s blindside.
Last year Mayfield was sacked just five times during a run that saw the team go 5-3 to finish the season. Greg Robinson has been benched for Justin McCray, and on the right side of the line, Chris Hubbard hasn’t been much better.
Every quarterback plays better when they are protected. Adding Williams would surely protect Mayfield much better than he has been to this point, and that could do enough to finish the season stronger than they did in 2018.
