Stay Out of the Middle

The Browns are a run-first offense. Or, at the very least, they are becoming that. The star power of the Nick Chubb-Kareem Hunt tandem has proved the Browns’ best offensive option on a team that includes Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr. A bit unconventional, but for the Browns, it’s worked thus far.

Unfortunately for the Browns, the Steelers’ defense has been absolutely red hot as of late. Minkah Fitzpatrick in the secondary, along with hybrid linebacking superstar TJ Watt has made Pittsburgh one of the NFL’s best defenses over the last month. But fortunately for the Browns, they do happen to have one Achilles heel on the defensive side of the ball: the edges of the field.

Offensive attacks, and specifically runs, to the outside, have been the Steelers’ one weakness since trading for Fitzpatrick and transforming their defense. Staying out of the middle of the field against Pittsburgh has proved to be the one way to consistently move the ball against their young and hungry defensive unit. Thankfully, the Browns have just the tools to capitalize on this.

Runs to the outside have been the Browns’ best asset in the running game this season. Nick Chubb is able to read the scheme well, and against the Steelers, he should have an easier time building up a head of steam to bowl over black and yellow defenders.
