Cleveland Browns: Jarvis Landry exacts his revenge on former team
By Dan Justik
Jarvis Landry had his issues with the Miami Dolphins during his final months with the organization, and it paid off for the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
One of the biggest moves John Dorsey made during his first offseason as the Cleveland Browns general manager in 2018 was trading for Jarvis Landry and signing him into an extension. The move signaled a culture change in Cleveland that they were turning assets into proven talent.
When the Browns acquired Landry, he was in the midst of a squabble with the Miami Dolphins organization and then head coach Adam Gase. During his final season in Miami, Landry was seen yelling at Gase on the sidelines multiple times and his on-field behavior was troublesome.
Landry also wanted to be paid like a top-tier receiver, something the Dolphins were not willing to do. Miami placed the franchise tag on Landry instead of giving him a new deal, which did not allow him to test the open market. Ultimately, the Browns swooped in that offseason and traded for Landry and gave him the extension he wanted.

Sunday was the first time Landry has taken the field against his former team since the trade, and it was viewed as a revenge game for Landry. Landry even stated Monday that he had been looking forward to this game – via Nate Ulrich and Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal.
"“I don’t really hold onto it. At the time when it happened, maybe then, just how things were communicated. Now I’m happy to be here. … This is definitely one of the games that I knew in two years I’d get a chance to have. I’m happy it’s here.” – Landry via the Akron Beacon Journal"
Landry took full advantage of facing his old team, catching 10 receptions for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Landry was not making just the easy plays, however, as he made several leaping grabs over Miami defenders, including his second touchdown reception.
Whether it was a part of the game plan or not, Baker Mayfield seemed to be looking for Landry often. And with all four of the Dolphins’ starting defensive backs out, Landry was finding holes for Mayfield to throw into.
Landry has been the best receiver for the Browns this season, even with Odell Beckham Jr. on the field next to him. He is making plays at all levels and has been Mayfield’s go-to in critical moments. Sunday’s performance built on his solid season, putting him at 59 receptions for 843 yards and five touchdowns in 11 games this season.
Now that Landry played the way he did against his former team, he can now fully move on from the situation. It paid off for the Browns, as Landry’s effort Sunday helped the Browns to a 41-24 victory over the Dolphins.
