There’s a lot of work to be done if the Cleveland Browns want to become a winning franchise and it all starts at the top with owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam

Jimmy and Dee Haslam need a business plan that details how the team will be built. Just as Pilot Oil has a plan for how it will sell fuel, fast food and merchandise, the Cleveland Browns need to have a methodology in place to acquire and develop talent and produce a culture of success.

The Haslams have been great owners from the standpoint of being willing to write checks to bring the top coaches and players to Cleveland.  They have not always made the right moves, but they have done their level best to bring a winning team to Cleveland.

Bringing the team all the way to Championship caliber is going to take excellence from the players, coaches, front office — and the ownership.

The role of the owner is not to do the general manager’s job. Ask Dallas or Washington fans how well that works. So the Haslams are not going to tell John Dorsey which players to sign and which to turn loose and that sort of thing (or at least we hope not).

However, they are going to establish the process and direction for how this team is going to be built moving forward.

Their job is not easy. Their goal is to be as good or better owners than say, Bob Kraft of New England because that is what is necessary to bring a championship to Cleveland.
