Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has had a rocky season to say the least. More importantly, Mayfield is lacking in leadership and accountability.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield’s sophomore season can officially be designated as a slump. With 3,548 yards passing, 19 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, Mayfield’s numbers are not exactly what he set out for when the season started.

More concerning then his play on the field however has been his lack leadership skills. Mayfield openly said that he did not put in enough work in the offseason. He publicly called out Duke Johnson in training camp over his contract issues. He had a twitter feud with Antonio Brown. He dresses like a hobo to after game press conferences.

Mayfield even called out the Browns training staff a few weeks back in regards to Odell Beckham’s injury, saying:

More from Dawg Pound Daily

"“I’d say it wasn’t handled right,” Mayfield said,  “He’s not able to run as well as he should be able to as well as he knows, and that’s frustrating for him. You can sense somebody’s frustration and where that comes from. It wasn’t handled the right way in our training room. It is what it is. His … not 100 percent is still good enough for us.”"

And then yesterday instead of punting on commenting about Freddie Kitchens job security he offered this gem, via Cleveland.com:

"“That’s not my decision to make, so whatever happens, happens,’’"

Enough is enough already. Look, we all know that Kitchens has not been getting the job done and more than likely is a one-and-done coach for this football team. But for Mayfield to come out and say that to reporters after a loss in inexcusable.

How can the man who publicly said that he wanted Kitchens back as head coach less than a year ago not support him now when things are going rough? That sounds like someone who is passing the buck onto someone else.

Well unfortunately for Mayfield, if he plays this poorly next season then he’s going to be next in line for people calling for his job. And one has to wonder how he would respond if put in that situation.

Why wait for next season to start becoming a leader? Why not take this team right now and start holding himself and other players accountable for their play and their work habits?

Next. Bill Belichick can get revenge on Art Modell. dark

There one game left in Cincinnati before the long offseason hits and reality sets in that this team needs an infusion of leadership and accountability. Baker Mayfield should look himself in the mirror and decide to start becoming that leader this upcoming Sunday.

And if Kitchens is fired come Sunday evening, then Mayfield should take some accountability for that. Be classy on his way out the door.
