Chris Petersen, former Washington head coach

The Browns will probably want someone with head coaching experience considering the issues they have had this season with the inexperienced Freddie Kitchens. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be NFL head coaching experience.

There have been some former college coaches who have become winners in the NFL and with offenses now playing what used to be considered strictly college schemes, there’s sure to be an increase of former collegiate coaches finding success at the next level.

light. More. One to cut, one to extend, one on the bubble

One potential name to look at in this regard is Chris Petersen, who was most recently the head coach of the Washington Huskies. Petersen spent six years in Washington and was a respectable 55-26 with them. He stepped down this year as the team was 8-5, following three-straight campaigns with at least 10 wins.

Still, Petersen isn’t remembered so much for his time with Washington but rather as the man behind one of the most exciting teams from 2006-2013, the Boise State Broncos. In his first season with the Broncos, Petersen was 13-0 and led his team to a shocking win in the Fiesta Bowl over the Oklahoma Sooners.

In his eight seasons at Boise State, Petersen was an incredible 92-12 and won at least 10 games in his first seven seasons. He may not have NFL experience, but he has plenty of clout as a coach and can bring a winning mindset.
