The Cleveland Browns have fired John Dorsey after two seasons as the team’s general manager amid dysfunction in the front office.

The Cleveland Browns fired John Dorsey Tuesday after two seasons as Cleveland’s general manager, according to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. The Browns were 13-18-1 during Dorsey’s two full seasons as the Browns general manager.

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam wanted to restructure Cleveland’s front office, which likely would have taken power away from Dorsey. Dorsey declined and the two sides agreed to mutually part ways.

The Browns front office has dealt with dysfunction for the past several months as Dorsey and his regime have had issues with Cleveland’s analytics staff. Leader of Cleveland’s analytics staff, Paul DePodesta is expected to have more power now that Dorsey has been fired.

Dorsey was celebrated as Cleveland’s general manager because of the talent he brought to the Browns roster. However, he has missed on several free agent signings and draft picks, creating issues on the field in 2019.

One black mark on Dorsey’s resume was his decision to hire Freddie Kitchens last offseason. Dorsey was in full control of the coaching search, and the result was a head coach who was in over his head and cost the team wins.

But one of the largest issues with Dorsey is it is believed that he wants the organization to run the way he wants it to run and has issues with collaborating. It is what caused his departure in Kansas City, and it looks like it is the reason he is departing from Cleveland.

Dorsey has been able to build extremely talented rosters, but when he is unable to work with others in the organization, those problems are going to come to a head. The dysfunction in the front office was just another part of Cleveland’s struggles in 2019.

Paul DePodesta appears to be in line to be the leader of Cleveland’s front office. The Browns are likely going to become a heavy analytics front office. That could mean Andrew Berry is in a position to become the team’s general manager, which would unite the team’s football side and analytics side.

The Browns may also allow their next head coach to hire his own general manager. It is has become common in today’s NFL where the general manager and head coach have become partners, such as Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch in San Francisco.

It remains to be seen how the Browns will align their front office, but it appears DePodesta got his wish to have more power. The result in DePodesta getting more power is that John Dorsey has been fired as Cleveland’s general manager after only 754 days in the position.
