Report: John Dorsey job status with Cleveland Browns in ‘serious doubt’
By Dan Justik
Just over two years since being named the Cleveland Browns general manager, John Dorsey’s tenure with the team could be at its end.
The Cleveland Browns may not be done making changes within the organization, as a Tuesday night meeting with the Haslam’s could determine John Dorsey’s fate as the team’s general manager.
Dorsey will meet with the Haslam’s on Tuesday night, and according to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Dorsey’s job status is in doubt. Dorsey was named the Browns general manager in December 2017, however the team is looking at every option after the struggles of 2019.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported that Jimmy Haslam is considering “structural changes” in the front office. That would strip most of Dorsey’s power as general manager, which would likely mean Dorsey would want to part ways.

Michael Lombardi of The Athletic first mentioned the possibility of changes in the Browns front office, saying that Freddie Kitchens would not be the only change in Cleveland this offseason.
Dorsey has added an influx of talent to the Browns roster, including Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr. However, he has made several mistakes on the roster and was the leader of the coaching search last offseason, which made Kitchens the head coach.
There have been reports that Browns Chief Strategy Officer Paul DePodesta was looking to have a bigger voice in the organization. DePodesta’s two picks for the Browns past two head coaching searches (Sean McDermott, Kevin Stefanski) have looked like the much better options than what the Browns have chosen (Hue Jackson, Kitchens).
Dorsey and his regime have reportedly not coexisted with DePodesta and his analytics staff. The dysfunction in the front office has apparently provoked the ire of Jimmy Haslam. It appears that DePodesta has Haslam’s ear more than Dorsey currently.
Cleveland’s current coaching search appears to being run by the Haslam’s instead of Dorsey and his team. Browns ownership will also reportedly allow the new head coach to have a large say in who should be the team’s general manager. Several head coaches are believed to want to bring in their own general manager, including Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
McDaniels is believed to be Cleveland’s first choice as head coach, as Dee Haslam has favored him for multiple years. If McDaniels were to become the Browns head coach, it is expected he would bring along Nick Caserio or Dave Ziegler to be the general manager.
Cleveland is also believed to want to bring back current Eagles Vice President of Football Operations, Andrew Berry. Berry was in Cleveland for three seasons as the Vice President of Player Personnel.
With Dorsey looking likely to be on the way out of Cleveland, there may be several changes in the front office. Current Browns Vice President of Player Personnel Alonzo Highsmith reportedly had a job lined up with the University of Miami on Monday, which hinted that changes in the front office were coming.
DePodesta seems to have gotten his wish and is now getting more power in the front office. It is unknown what role he would have the front office, but DePodesta looks to be in line to have a big role in Cleveland’s front office now that Dorsey appears to be on the way out.
