Background on every reported Cleveland Browns head coach candidate
By Dan Justik
Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer
Urban Meyer has not interviewed for the Cleveland Browns head coaching vacancy and Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said the team is focusing on candidates with head coaching experience at this time. However, Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports reported the Browns have “serious interest” in Meyer for their head coaching vacancy.
Meyer retired from coaching after the 2018 season due to a brain cyst that hindered him due to stress. The 55-year-old retired from coaching following the 2010 season because of health issues that were also related to stress, but returned to coaching for the 2012 season as the head coach at Ohio State.
Meyer spent seven seasons as Ohio State’s head coach, compiling a record of 83-9, including one national championship. He has an overall NCAA head coaching record of 187-32, a winning percentage of .854, and has won three national championships.
His success in college has been credited to his strong leadership and ability to build a culture around the program. His teams have been viewed as some of the toughest and disciplined teams in the nation. Meyer also has strong connections with some of the top coaches in America, which helps him build top coaching staffs.
Meyer has put together some of the best offenses in college football and is typically forward-thinking with his schemes.
It is unknown if Meyer would be successful coaching in the NFL as he has never been charged with coaching veterans in the NFL instead of college kids. It is also unknown if he could coach in the NFL long-term due to his health issues and brain cyst. He may not have an interview set up currently, but Meyer could emerge as a candidate for the Browns as the process drags out.
