3. Mike McCarthy, former Green Bay Packers Head Coach

For a while — both this year and last — Mike McCarthy seemed to be the preferred pick. He had a previous working relationship with John Dorsey as the two were on the Green Bay staff together. That never came to fruition in 2019 as Dorsey took a gamble on Freddie Kitchens.

Once Kitchens was gone, it seemed as though Dorsey would go back to his ‘safer’ pick. However, a wrench was thrown in that plan when Dorsey moved on. McCarthy still interviewed but with the way that thing went, it doesn’t seem promising as it once did.

Team owner Jimmy Haslam planned the interview with a press conference in the middle of it and he just up and left during the process. That doesn’t really seem as though he’s too serious about this one. Then again, with Haslam, that may have meant nothing at all.

Even with the odd presser in the middle of the meeting, McCarthy needs to be in serious contention. He has more head coaching experience than anyone else they’ve interviewed, and he won an awful lot. McCarthy was a coach for 13 years in Green Bay and has a record of 125-77-2.

In the postseason, McCarthy went 10-8 and was at the helm when they won a Super Bowl following the 2010 season.

McCarthy’s greatest strength is his ability to work with quarterbacks, something that’s incredibly important for the Browns as they look to help Baker Mayfield take the next step in his development.
