3 most recent updates to the Cleveland Browns coaching search
By Dan Justik
The Cleveland Browns are heading into their second week of their coaching search and there have been updates to how the process unfolding.
This offseason, there have been only five head coaching openings available, which includes the Cleveland Browns. Two of the openings were caused by mid-season firings (Washington, Carolina). Two of the openings were filled almost filled immediately (Washington, Dallas).
Entering the second week of the offseason, the Browns are joined by the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers as the only head coaching openings available. Cleveland seems to be the one job that there has been the most movement.
The Browns search committee has been busy traveling around the country interviewing candidates, interviewing four candidates in a span of three days last week. After taking a break on Sunday, they will be back to interviewing candidates Monday.
Cleveland has already lost one of their interviewed candidates, as former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy will be hired by the Dallas Cowboys. McCarthy was the first candidate the Browns interviewed.
McCarthy’s chances to become Cleveland’s head coach seemed to drop dramatically once John Dorsey parted ways with the Browns. McCarthy had connections with the Browns front office because of their time in Green Bay, but he lost some of those connections when Dorsey moved on.
With McCarthy off the board, the Browns now have conducted three other interviews (Greg Roman, Eric Bieniemy, Robert Saleh) and have three more lined up (Brian Daboll, Josh McDaniels, Kevin Stefanski). Bieniemy, Roman, Saleh, and Stefanski are all still coaching playoff teams.
Here are the three most recent updates to the Cleveland Browns coaching search, as of the morning of Monday, January 6.
