Cleveland Browns: Jim Schwartz should be on Browns sideline in 2020
While the Cleveland Browns continue their head coaching search, no matter the hire, Jim Schwartz should be on the Browns sidelines in 2020.
When news first broke the Jim Schwartz was being interviewed for the Cleveland Browns head coaching position, much of the reaction was not positive. It mostly had to do with his 29-51 record as a head coach, all with the Detroit Lions from 2009 through 2013.
While Schwartz did have very little success in his time in Detroit, he did make the playoffs one time, and made progress most years from one season to the next.
While Schwartz may not be the best fit for the head gig of the Cleveland Browns, he still would be a great hire for the Browns staff, and should be brought on as the defensive coordinator for whoever does take the head coaching job for the Browns.

Schwartz is a tough, no nonsense guy, which is exactly the type of guy the Browns need in their organization. The 2019 season was nowhere near where it was anticipated to be in terms of expectations, and much of that was to do with the lack of discipline and overall control by the coaching staff. Schwartz’s addition would bring the type of discipline seen from someone like Gregg Williams, the Browns defensive coordinator and interim head coach in 2018, where the team finished the year strong.
The young talent on the Cleveland Browns defense would greatly benefit from having a tough coach that could teach them it takes more than just raw talent to win. He could also give them the discipline they severely lacked in 2019 from their head coach Freddie Kitchens and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
Jim Schwartz would also be a great hire that could help guide the potential first year head coach in the rough waters that are leading an entire team. Whether that hire be Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels or Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski, both would be completely new to running an entire team. Schwartz could be a shoulder for them to lean on and help them in more ways than they would think.
No matter what it takes, Jim Schwartz needs to be on the Cleveland Browns sideline as the defensive coordinator in 2020 and beyond. It would be a huge addition not only for the players, but also for the new head coach and the rest of the coaching staff they surround themselves with.
