Daily Dawg Tags: Josh McDaniels may want Cleveland Browns ‘sweeping changes’
By Dan Justik
The Daily Dawg Tags brings you all the Cleveland Browns news you need to know, including how Josh McDaniels will recommend “sweeping changes.”
The Cleveland Browns will be wrapping up their coaching search on Friday when they interview Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. McDaniels will be the eighth and final candidate the Browns will interview for the head coaching position.
McDaniels is believed to be a favorite for the position and Friday’s interview could push the organization into making McDaniels an offer. With the Browns being a hometown team, it would reportedly be a dream for McDaniels if he becomes the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
However, even if the Cleveland Browns are his dream job, it will not be a shoo-in that McDaniels will take the Browns job if offered. Instead, he is going to want to make sure the organization and football operations will be aligned the way he wants it.

Cleveland Browns News
"McDaniels figures to be very specific about organizational realignment, while remaining aware certain among his key ideas might be rebuffed. He would love for a union with Cleveland to work out well. If not, he would go back to the Patriots, who have been paying him more than any assistant coach in NFL history."
Although Jimmy Haslam will allow the head coach to be heavily involved in the search for a general manager, McDaniels is going to want to have the football operations run in a manner that he believes will help the team excel. If McDaniels’ is truly Haslam’s No. 1 choice, it would not be surprising if Haslam follows through with McDaniels’ requests.
Could Joe Schobert be on the way out?
Browns linebacker Joe Schobert has played his way into a big payday this offseason and will be a coveted free agent. However, Randy Gurzi wonders if Cleveland’s new reliance on analytics will make it even more unlikely Schobert returns to the Browns.
"On Friday, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported that new Giants head coach Joe Judge is expected to speak with Kitchens, who was fired on Dec. 30 after just one season as the Browns’ head coach. Judge and Kitchens previously served on the same coaching staff at Mississippi State in 2005; Kitchens was the school’s running backs coach at the time, while Judge served as a graduate assistant."
Even though Freddie Kitchens struggled during his tenure as the Cleveland Browns head coach, as well as the offensive play-caller, his career as a position coach would make him a solid hire for the New York Giants. Most of Kitchens’ NFL coaching tenure has been as a position coach, so Joe Judge will be hiring an experienced coach, who can also help Judge with what he learned in his first season as a head coach.
Jim Schwartz should be on the Cleveland Browns sideline in 2020
The Cleveland Browns interviewed Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz for their coaching vacancy on Wednesday, but he is also viewed as a defensive coordinator candidate. Matthew McFatridge believes no matter what, Schwartz should be on the Browns sideline in some capacity in 2020.
