Top 10 single seasons by a Cleveland Browns player in the 2010s
By Mitch Zoloty
No. 1: Baker Mayfield (2018)
This is probably the most predictable spot on this list. Baker Mayfield broke the all-time record for most touchdown passes thrown by a rookie quarterback in only 13 games.
That clinches the No. 1 overall spot on this list. Despite having a rough sophomore slump, anyone who says Baker Mayfield isn’t the future of this franchise probably hasn’t been paying attention to the Cleveland Browns this past season.
Despite dealing with a head coaching and play-caller change his rookie season, Mayfield threw for 27 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, 3,725 yards on 63.8 percent completion percentage, along with 39 rushes for 131 yards and led the Browns on four game-winning drives.
Those are the type of numbers you want to see out of your franchise quarterback in 13 games. Sure the interceptions could be diminished, but Mayfield provided an extra spark to the Browns franchise that we hadn’t seen in years.
Mayfield is surprisingly the only quarterback to start all 16 games for the Cleveland Browns in a single season in the 2010’s decade. His passing touchdowns in 2018 ranked fifth all-time by a Browns quarterback in a single season and was the most a Browns quarterback had thrown for since Derek Anderson in 2007.
When objectively looking at numbers, you could argue Mayfield should be lower on this list. However, you have to consider he did this his rookie year, in 13 games, with Hue Jackson as his head coach for a majority of those games.
Now that Kevin Stefanski is Baker’s new play-caller, I expect Baker to appear on this list with some significantly better numbers on the 2020s list 10 years from now.
