Daily Dawg Tags: Cleveland Browns take heat for analytics approach
By Randy Gurzi
The Cleveland Browns are leaning back toward analytics and now everyone is happy, which is the subject of today’s Daily Dawg Tags
It seems as though there’s always something to pick apart. The Cleveland Browns were heavy on the analytics during the Sashi Brown tenure, which had people begging for a ‘football guy’ to take over. That happened with John Dorsey but before long, there were cries to use analytics more as some felt Dorsey discounted the work done by people such as Paul DePodesta.
So now, Dorsey is gone as is his entire staff — Alonzo Highsmith, Eliot Wolf — and a 32-year old Andrew Berry is the new general manager. They also have a young head coach in Kevin Stefanski and of course, DePodesta continues to grow in influence.
Unsurprisingly, there are again some very unhappy people who think they’re taking a step in the right direction — and are “out of control.” That story and more can be found in today’s Daily Dawg Tags.

"“Out of control,” Wolf said of the Browns and other NFL teams who embrace an analytics-based model. “When something goes wrong, who takes responsibility? Their answer: ‘Well, that’s what the data told us.’ What a crock. That’s what got ‘em 1-31.”"
Before we dig too much into the words here, you have to realize that Ron Wolf is the father if Eliot Wolf, ao he’s not exactly unbiased in his opinion. One thing that’s for sure, they were going in the wrong direction last season, so we probably should just give this regime some time before calling it a failure or ‘out of control’.
"“Mel Kiper Jr. – ESPN.com: OT Mekhi Becton (Louisville)”Of note: Kiper calls Becton a 6-foot-7, 370-pound “mountain of a man” who would help address the team’s “clear weakness.”"
The rest of the analysts that Gribble looks at also favor offensive tackle. Tristan Wirfs, Andrew Thomas, and Becton all received multiple votes. It probably wouldn’t be surprising to see any of these names called when the Browns are on the clock.
Browns land offensive coordinator in Alex Van Pelt
A longtime NFL backup and quarterbacks coach, Alex Van Pelt is set to join Kevin Stefanski’s staff as the new offensive coordinator.
