Round 3, Pick 74: Brandon Jones, S, Texas

We stayed put here for the first time and landed a potential starting safety in Brandon Jones out of Texas. The Browns had a lot of issues at safety last season, which was unexpected following their 2018 campaign. That year, both Damarious Randall and Jabrill Peppers were coming into their own and looked to be studs.

Then, Peppers was included in the trade that landed them Odell Beckham, Jr. from the New York Giants. Peppers continued to play well for them, but the move was still understandable. Especially considering Randall was still there and they signed veteran Morgan Burnett to replace Peppers. They also felt strongly that Jermaine Whitehead could be a starter.

However, things ended up not going as planned as Whitehead threatened to kill reporters for criticizing him and was subsequently released. Randall played poorly for the majority of the season as he seemed to be disinterested which could have been due to his lack of a contract extension.

As for Burnett, he finally started to turn a corner when he got more snaps after Whitehead’s release but then tore his Achilles. Simply put, they need an infusion of youth and talent, and Jones can bring that. He’s more of a strong safety and Cleveland can use that since they seemed to have lost a lot of toughness with the departure of Peppers.
