The Cleveland Browns starting quarterback position is locked up for next season. However, the backup quarterback position is not. Here are a few names that you could see the Browns bring in to fill that role.

The Cleveland Browns have their quarterback of the future in Baker Mayfield. There’s no doubt in my mind that he is the future of the Browns and will be the starting quarterback for the franchise for the next decade to come. However, he is still young, and could use a backup that can mentor him.

The mentor backup quarterback role is one of the more underrated roles in football, especially when you have a young quarterback at the helm. These veteran quarterbacks provide insight that can be essential to helping younger quarterbacks adapt to the league.

Some guys don’t have long careers as quarterbacks in the NFL due to their physical limitations, and not due to their lack of knowledge of the game. Guys like Josh McCown and Ryan Fitzpatrick don’t have the physical tools to be franchise quarterbacks, but are incredibly intelligent in terms of football knowledge.

These type of backup quarterbacks serve as another coach on the staff, and help serve as a big brother role, which is something that Baker could really benefit from. Current backup quarterback Garrett Gilbert is a good quarterback and deserves a spot in the NFL as a backup, but the Browns may not be the best fit for him. He isn’t a guy with a lot of NFL experience, and could really benefit from being on a team with a well established veteran quarterback instead for him to learn from.

With that being said, let’s take a look at some of the backup quarterbacks who might be a better fit for the Cleveland Browns.
