The Cleveland Browns have made some missteps when it comes to the draft. Here are some of the players they could’ve drafted from the state of Ohio.

The Cleveland Browns have proven there is no exact science to scouting in the NFL.

There are many different methodologies used by teams when preparing for the draft. Some teams prefer to go after character guys over talent. Other teams look for players who will best fit their scheme.

Since returning in 1999, the Browns haven’t hit many home runs in the draft. You can even say there were a few hail marys that didn’t connect.

No matter the regime, products of Ohio haven’t been high enough on the Browns draft board. Whether they grew up in Ohio or played college ball in the state, players are too often overlooked.

Here are five standout players the Browns passed on from their own backyard.

5. Luke Kuechly, Linebacker

Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Luke Kuechly was a stud throughout his professional career.

He was voted as the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2012. The following year, Kuechly was voted the AP Defensive Player of the Year. During his tenure in the NFL, he was a seven-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro.

Unfortunately, injuries forced him to retire this past offseason after eight seasons. While his short career may make his hall of fame credentials debated, his impact is unquestionable.

Who the Browns drafted instead: Justin Gilbert; just one pick ahead of Kuechly in 2014.
