Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield will be the first to say that 2019 did not go the way he or the rest of the team expected. The browns were expected to explode onto the scene and reach the playoffs. Instead, They finished with a worse record than 2018.
Mayfield also had his fair share of problems, as he struggled for the majority of the season and never looked comfortable in Freddie Kitchens’ offense. The result was Mayfield statistically being one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the NFL last season.
His struggles in 2019 have caused many to wonder if he truly is the franchise quarterback he was expected to be. Not only did he have issues with his on-field performance, but he also had problems being the team’s leader.

This offseason seems to be an abnormality with several solid veteran quarterbacks reaching free agency. However, it would be way too early for the Browns to give up on Mayfield and feel the need to pressure him. Although he still needs to make adjustments to his game and continue to develop, pressuring him with a veteran quarterback who would want to start could hinder his development.

The Browns are building an interesting coaching staff because of the variable levels of experience across the board. Most notably on the defensive side of the ball, the Browns are building an experienced defensive staff who defensive coordinator Joe Woods has connections with.
