Grading Cleveland Browns position groups before free agency and draft
By Clay Goodwin
Safety: D+
Safety, right now, is the Browns second most urgent need behind offensive line. With Damarious Randall presumably out the door, the unit is left with Morgan Burnett, Sheldrick Redwine, Juston Burris and Eric Murray.
Burnett is 31 years old and coming off an Achilles injury. There is little certainty that he can be a productive player again. Burris is nothing more than a depth player for the Browns. He is serviceable if needed but not a player you want to start.
Murray is a hybrid player that can play slot corner or safety. He is not dominant at either position, though. He is not someone to count on at safety.
Redwine is the best safety left in the group with Randall out. He was a rookie last year and was thrown into the rotation due to injuries. He showed flashes of good ability. He is a strong player that can make good reads. He has ton of room to grow.
Cleveland desperately needs to add at least one if not several safeties this offseason. Do not be surprised to see a draft pick or two spent on a safety, as well as a veteran signed in free agency. This group will likely be much improved come fall, but as it stands now, it ranks a D+.
The Cleveland Browns have a very solid roster built thus far. Look for them to boost the positions of need in the next coming weeks, and the ranks of those positions to rise. An important offseason lies ahead.
