The Cleveland Browns new offensive coordinator will have a lot on his plate this offseason as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Alex Van Pelt spoke to the media this week for the first time since taking over as the Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator. He stated that while he is capable of play-calling it has not yet been decided if he will do so or not. Regardless of that, Van Pelt will have a lot of work to do as this offseason moves along.

First and foremost he needs to do everything in his power to get Baker Mayfield playing at a high level. This is a quarterback-driven league, and we as Browns fans know all too well that poor quarterback play usually equates to many losses.

Van Pelt said he believes he can help Mayfield the most with is footwork:

"“I want the feet to be like Mozart and not like Metallica,” Van Pelt said. “With the footwork, it’s just a fluid motion. You’re really back there dancing through the pocket as you go through your progressions.” — via Nate Ulrich, Akron Beacon Journal"

Aside from getting Mayfield right, Van Pelt has to try and orchestrate building an offense around running back Nick Chubb, the clubs best player on that side of the ball. Hopefully this new coaching staff will realize that and make Chubb the focal point of this offense.

Van Pelt will also be tasked with patching together an offensive line that may see up to three new starters for the 2020 season. Both tackle spots will be up for grabs and it will be imperative that the coaching staff makes the right decisions on who will play.

Also the installation of a brand new offense will be a huge priority for Van Pelt. His ability to teach the new offense to his players may determine how well this offense will succeed in 2020. As we saw last year under Freddie Kitchens, it is hard to overcome bad coaching in the NFL.

Hopefully under Van Pelt’s watch, this offense can flourish to new heights that we have not seen before. But it will be up to him and head coach Kevin Stefanski to be able to juggle all that is on their collective plates.
