Round 3, Pick 74: Ashtyn Davis, Safety, Cal

Cleveland gets a very good player in the third round. Ashtyn Davis from Cal played four years for the program after being a walk-on. He also ran the hurdles for their track and field team for four years. He even won the Pac 12 in the 110-meter hurdles.

Davis loves seeing the whole field and making plays coming downhill. He can break on the play quickly and attacks the ball. He is fearless when making tackles. He’s more than willing to take on a bigger tight end, which is a great trait to have as an NFL safety.

Opposing tight ends have regularly hurt the Browns for the last few seasons. Davis will likely change that. He’s a good tackler and will fill his appropriate lane in the run game. The Browns were awful in the run game and missed tackles last year. The defense needs as many sure-tacklers as it can get, and that is where Davis thrives.

He also returned kicks for the Golden Bears, which shows his athleticism and instincts. The Browns could surely consider him as a weapon in the return game, but nonetheless they get a fast and aggressive safety to cover the middle.

Damarious Randall is looking like he will not be on the Browns roster next year and Morgan Burnett was unproductive in his time last year before tearing his Achilles. The safety position is wide open and in need of a talented player to lead the defensive backfield. Davis is a mature and experienced player that can give the Browns immediate production.
