Tristan Wirfs explosive Combine should make him top option for Cleveland Browns
By Dan Justik
The Cleveland Browns will likely be drafting an offensive tackle, and Tristan Wirfs’ explosive Combine should put him squarely in Cleveland’s sights.
The Cleveland Browns clearly had their eyes on the top offensive tackles at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, as they met with several of the offensive tackle prospects. That group included Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs.
Wirfs is one of four offensive tackles who have been viewed as the top tackle in the class, along with Jedrick Wills, Andrew Thomas, and Mekhi Becton. But after Wirfs’ performance at the Combine on Friday night, he should have firmly planted himself into the conversation at No. 10 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft for the Browns.
Wirfs was expected to test well and show off his athleticism. However, he still managed to blow those expectations out of the water. No matter what he was asked to do, Wirfs performed each test at a high level.

The 6-foot-5 and 320 pound prospect ran the fastest 40-yard dash among offensive linemen with a time of 4.85. He also had the best vertical jump (36.5 inches) and best broad jump (121 inches) among offensive linemen. Wirfs also finished with the seventh-best 20-yard shuttle time and fifth-best 3-cone drill time.
Wirfs also showed off his athleticism by fluently moving around the field during the drills designed to show a linemen’s ability to change direction. He also was under control and quick during the pulling drills.
It was well-known that the 21-year-old had great athleticism, as he was able to show it off on his game tape. His performance in Indianapolis just solidified what everyone knew, as well as confirming that it translates to his on-field performance.
Wirfs’ performance at the Combine should have the Browns coaching staff drooling at what his potential would be in their offense. Kevin Stefanski’s offense requires all five offensive linemen to move well side-to-side with his wide zone rushing attack. As Wirfs showed at the Combine, his movement skills are arguably his biggest strength.
After playing in Iowa’s pro-style offense, Wirfs will have some experience in the schemes of Stefanski’s offense. In fact, in terms of the zone schemes, Wirfs showed he had the strength to move blocks upfield during zone rushes.
There had been some belief that Wirfs would have to transition to guard in the NFL because he may not have the length to be a tackle. However, with an arm measurement of 34 inches, Wirfs should be able to at least be given a shot at tackle. Whether that shot will be at left tackle or right tackle will be the question NFL coaches will have to answer.
With several top tackles in this draft class, the Browns will have their options at No. 10 overall. But after his performance at the Combine, Wirfs should have solidified himself at the beginning of the conversation for Cleveland’s offensive tackle search.
