Cleveland Browns: Looming draft day and Free Agency decisions
By Greg Newland
Best case scenario
Best Case — I’m hesitant to spend big money on Jack Conklin, but other than QB, I would argue OT is the most important position on the field for the offense. Conklin has a solid track record and paired with a great coach like Callahan, I believe the 25-year-old only has room to grow. I think the Browns take the risk and sign the FA to a big-time deal.
At this point, I’ll trust the professional evaluators on which of the tackles to pick at 10. I’m still holding out hope Simmons will somehow slip into our hands.
However, a 4.39 40-yard dash at the combine most likely solidified him as a top 6-7 pick. These three young offensive linemen all seem like phenomenal talents with plenty of pros and cons to sort through.
It’s time to trust the new regime on evaluation, maybe this is Paul DePodesta’s time to shine. If it was me filling out the card, Thomas seems like the safest pick, but Wirfs and Becton most likely have a higher ceiling.
I can honestly say I’d be happy with any of the three, but I’m currently leaning toward Becton because of the athleticism, massive size and being a true LT. Becton paired with Conklin in 2020 would be a substantial upgrade for Mayfield from 2019.
