ARLINGTON, TX – APRIL 26: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announces a pick by the Cleveland Browns during the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft at AT /

The Browns have had some success recently drafting players in the first round. Which players make the list for top five first-round picks since 1999.

Since the Cleveland Browns came back to the NFL in 1999 after losing the team in 1996, they have had very little success. In the past 20 years, the Browns have made the playoffs only once. That year was 2002 and they’re currently on a 17 year and counting playoff drought.

Yet every year, the Cleveland fans think we are one draft away from the Super Bowl. That is the best thing about Browns fans. Even to their own fault, they are extremely loyal and supportive.

But, unfortunately, since 1999, the Browns have not had much success in the draft. They have swung and missed on many opportunities to get great players. To the dismay of their passionate fans, they have watched drafted players turn into busts over and over again.

Their lack of success in the draft is surely a correlation to the struggles on the field. It is hard to build success and have stability when the players brought in do not contribute to the team.

Having said that, there have been some good selections as well. Rounds 1-7 have produced great players for the Browns in the last 20 years. Here, we are going to focus on the first-round selections.

Good teams are able to select excellent players in the first round and develop them into cornerstone players for years to come. Cleveland has recently had struggles, but they have hit on some studs.

Let’s take a deeper look into the top five first-round selections for the Browns since 1999.
