Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy while at Oklahoma and now the school announced they will put up a statue to commemorate his award-winning season

Baker Mayfield wasn’t supposed to be a star player. He wasn’t heavily recruited and even had to walk on at Texas Tech. Once there, Mayfield ended up playing just one season before losing his job to Patrick Mahomes.

He then enrolled at Oklahoma and again had to walk on to the program. This time, he was able to keep the job and wound up having a great career for the Sooners which culminated in him winning the Heisman trophy in 2017.

That year, he had 4,627 yards passing with 43 touchdowns against only six picks. Now, former head coach Lincoln Riley has announced that Mayfield’s Alma Mater will be unveiling a statue on April 18 to commemorate the fantastic season.

Mayfield’s great run with the University of Oklahoma led to him being the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft — where the Cleveland Browns took him over Sam Darnold who many expected to be the choice.

The young quarterback was outspoken about his desire to join the Browns and turn around the struggling franchise. His bravado and talent on the field helped Cleveland put together a 5-3 run to finish off his first year in the NFL. He was also able to break the league record for the most touchdown passes in a rookie season with 27.

This past year wasn’t as successful with Mayfield as he and the Browns struggled under rookie head coach Freddie Kitchens. They hope to make some positive changes this season but there’s some concern as he’s now on his fourth head coach in just three seasons.

Whether or not he can turn things back around, there’s no denying that his time at Oklahoma was remarkable and he will now have a statue to remind fans of that run.
