Cleveland Browns defensive back room feeling empty right now
By Greg Newland
Anthony Harris – Free Safety
Anthony Harris, an undrafted free agent from 2015, has turned into one of the best safeties in the NFL during his tenure with the Minnesota Vikings. Harris was primarily a backup his first four seasons with the Vikings, but he broke out in year five with 60 tackles and was tied for the league lead in interceptions with six.
Harris is entering the prime of his career and will likely demand huge money as he looks to sign his first major deal. There is hope he will be enticed to Cleveland with his long relationship with defensive back coach Jeff Howard and head coach Kevin Stefanski, who both spent tremendous time with Harris in Minnesota. While Harris is another huge risk with only one season of dominant stats, there is no better judge of talent than his position coach. If Howard thinks he is worth the money, pay the man!
The Bottom-Line
With the new analytical regime led by Andrew Berry, it will be interesting to see where the Browns are willing to spend big money on free agent upgrades. Historically, analytically led teams focus their spending on quarterback, offensive tackle, cornerback and rush ends. While the Browns need upgrades at tackle and likely defensive end with thoughts that Olivier Vernon is on his way out, there is no doubt both safety positions should be high on the list as well.
After John Dorsey was willing to shell out big dollars in 2019, Browns fans will be on edge if Berry reaches for the discount shelf in 2020 with Baker Mayfield and Myles Garrett still on rookie deals.
