The Daily Dawg Tags bring you all the Cleveland Browns news you need to know including a look at how much money they saved releasing Christian Kirksey

On Tuesday, the Cleveland Browns made some headlines for two pieces of news. One was the appointment to the position of NFLPA president for center J.C. Tretter. The other news wasn’t as pleasant as linebacker Christian Kirksey was released.

The team tried to convince him to take a pay cut but in the end, they decided to simply let him go in a cap-saving move.

With Kirksey out, it leaves Joel Bitonio as the longest-tenured member of the Browns. Both players joined the team in 2014, and Bitonio is the last man standing.

Cleveland Browns News

Browns save $7.5 million in salary cap space with release of linebacker Christian Kirksey — Josh Edwards, CBS Sports

"“The Cleveland Browns have released veteran outside linebacker Christian Kirksey. Kirksey had two years remaining on his contract but has missed a combined 23 games over the past two seasons. The move will save the organization roughly $7.5 million in salary cap space.”"

The writing was on the wall here but apparently the Browns still tried to get a new deal done with Christian Kirksey. He leaves a big hole but the struggles with durability didn’t help his case — and had as much to do with the move as any cap savings.

Browns’ JC Tretter elected as new NFLPA president — Cameron Wolfe, ESPN

"“Cleveland Browns center JC Tretter was elected NFL Players Association president by the board of player representatives on Tuesday afternoon during union meetings.”"

Tretter seems to be high on the new CBA but instead of pushing his agenda, he’s trying to help others understand it to make an informed decision as a vote approaches.

The Browns can finally escape football purgatory, but not without protecting Baker Mayfield — Christian D’Andrea, SB Nation

"“Left tackle Greg Robinson is gone. Right tackle Chris Hubbard was a turnstile in 2019 (27 blown blocks in 13 starts). Upgrading either would be a major step forward for Mayfield, who was sacked 40 times in 2019. The 2020 NFL Draft is loaded with insanely athletic tackles, so this could be a need the team waits until April to address.”"

D’Andrea has three keys to fixing the Browns but the main thing will be figuring out how to protect Baker Mayfield. He’s the key to it all and if he can’t stay upright, the struggles will continue.

Cleveland Browns releasing Christian Kirksey is not a surprising decision

Dan Justik looks at the news of Christian Kirksey’s release and says that it wasn’t exactly a surprise decision from the new front office.
