Cordy Glenn to Cleveland Browns?
By Greg Newland
The veteran left tackle has been cut by the Cincinnati Bengals, could he be the solution for the Cleveland Browns offensive line in 2020?
Adam Schefter reported that Cordy Glenn has been released from the Cincinnati Bengals after the team originally looked to trade the left tackle. Glenn who was originally drafted in the second round (overall no. 41) by the Buffalo Bills will now look for his third team. Glenn started 16 games in four of his first six seasons but has not played a full season since 2015.
Glenn made the switch from tackle to guard for the Bengals with Jonah Williams being drafted in 2019. After Williams suffered a season-ending injury, Glenn was moved back to tackle. Given injuries and inconsistencies, the Cleveland Browns could certainly use someone with versatility.
Am I excited about the University of Georgia alumni coming to Cleveland? Truthfully, not quite yet. Glenn was a part of a coaching disagreement that got him suspended a game in 2019 and had a concussion that kept him sidelined six weeks in 2019.
Glenn received a big contract with the Buffalo Bills previously and will save the Bengals $9.5 million next year in cap space. Over the cap estimates Glenn’s value at $4-6 million on the open market, but I’m not convinced Glenn is any better than Chris Hubbard.
Hubbard would be an easy cut if Glenn joined the team, but he could be the actual replacement. An overpaid tackle that performs at mediocre levels.
My biggest suspicions currently are injuries and the Bengal’s eagerness to ship Glenn out of town. Is this another Trent Williams situation where a guy just needs a fresh start? Glenn did perform well while on the field, but the Browns are in desperate need of a culture change, especially after the departure of Joe Schobert and Christian Kirksey. I’m not sold this is a guy to help with that.
Glenn is better-known pass-blocker than run-blocker which could come to relief for Baker Mayfield. Given how bad the situation was in 2019, the Browns should evaluate every single tackle that is available.
Glenn very well may fit the Andrew Berry analytical mold. If the Browns do land Glenn and he stays healthy, its probably a home run… I’m just not sold he can stay healthy.
