Matthew Judon – Defensive End

Last but certainly not least the Browns must consider some edge help to get Myles Garrett in more one-on-one situations. Matt Judon from the division rival Baltimore Ravens could be a prime target for Andrew Berry this offseason.

Judon was a fifth-round pick in 2016 and has been with the Ravens ever since. Judon became a full-time starter in 2019 and ended the year with 54 tackles and 9.5 sacks. After earning his first Pro Bowl appearance in 2019, Judon will likely make a nice payday in 2020 free agency, but it shouldn’t be any more than what would be owed to Vernon.

While Judon is not a high-profile free agent currently, he is a young player who has shown improvement each and every year since he was a rookie. Pass rushers require a premium so Judon will not be cheap. However when compared to top-tier free agents that are available, he will still likely come at a bit of a discount. Baltimore is infamous for watching their groomed talent walk before paydays, with Za’Darius Smith being the prime example from last offseason.

Recap

The Browns certainly have voids that need filled, and it is easy to get sucked into wanting to sign all the big-name free agents. However, if you look at some of the most successful teams, they are built on salary cap discipline and scouting. While I certainly do hope the Browns make a run at an Anthony Harris or Cory Littleton, it is important to remember some of these “second-day signer” names could be equally impactful for the Browns in 2020.
