Arguably the top offensive tackle available in free agency in 2020 is Jack Conklin. He has been linked to the Cleveland Browns, so let’s take a look at how good of a fit Conklin would be in Cleveland.

The Cleveland Browns have a serious need at both offensive tackle positions. With holes at left tackle, right tackle, and right guard, the team is going to be spending a good amount of money and draft capital to patch up these holes.

However, the team is likely not going to rely on draft picks to fill all three holes. Throwing three rookies into the line of fire to protect your franchise quarterback is not ideal, especially if you would have to pair two rookies next to each other.

When it comes to offensive line play, chemistry and experience are key. It will take time to build chemistry between a line with three new starters, but the team has two offensive linemen with great experience already in Joel Bitonio and J.C. Tretter.

Bitonio will be able to aid a rookie left tackle in gaining experience through their communication, and Tretter would be able to do the same for a rookie right guard. Having a rookie right guard next to a rookie right tackle though would be a problem.

The Browns need to decide to fill one of the two right spots on the offensive line with a veteran, as they will be essential in the development of the other. Tretter will be busy being the brains of the entire offensive line and setting run schemes, as the center is usually responsible for.

With that burden on his shoulders, it would be smart to bring in a veteran right tackle to help mentor a rookie right guard. Looking for a long-term solution, the Browns should look to sign someone young. This makes Jack Conklin the perfect player for them to sign, before looking at the specifics.

Conklin is expected to make some serious cash in free agency this season. Spotrac.com projects his market value to be around $15 million, and some desperate team will probably give him one to two million more dollars than that. Would it be worth it to sign Conklin for the Browns? Let’s take a deep dive into him as a player.
