Tendering Kareem Hunt was a smart move by the Cleveland Browns as they can now get him on a cheap deal or be compensated if he were to leave in free agency

It seemed like the right move and with time running out, the Cleveland Browns finally pulled the trigger and placed a tender on restricted free agent Kareem Hunt. The one-time NFL rushing leader was originally drafted in the third round by the Kansas City Chiefs and joined Cleveland last season.

He was released by Kansas City when a video surfaced of him involved in an altercation with a female and he had to sit his first eight games in Cleveland. Once he was eligible to play, he was a great compliment to Nick Chubb and excelled as a receiving back.

Up until the tender was placed, it appeared an original-round tender would be used. That would mean that any team that decided to sign Hunt would owe the Browns a third-round pick. Apparently, Cleveland wanted more assurance he would be with them in 2020 as they gave him a second-round tender.

Hunt is still free to negotiate with NFL teams but the tender gives the Browns the right to match any contract he is offered. It also allows them to say no to a deal offered by another club and in exchange, they get a second-round pick.

In addition to Hunt, the Browns placed a tender on tight end Pharaoh Brown, running back Dontrell Hilliard, and wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge.

They also released Morgan Burnett, a move many saw coming after the John Dorsey addition ended 2019 on the IR with a torn Achilles.
