Cleveland Browns trade back and load up in 7-round mock draft
By Randy Gurzi
Back in the second round thanks to their trade with the Houston Texans — they sent running back Duke Johnson for a conditional pick which turned into this one — the Browns look to add more to the defensive line. As much as Davon Hamilton is going to help in the middle of the line, Cleveland needs more help on the edge.
Myles Garrett and Olivier Vernon are solid players but with Chad Thomas as the top reserve, they clearly need some help with their depth. They get that here with Khalid Kareem out of Notre Dame. Considered a developmental player in terms of pass-rushing, Kareem is ideally built for the edge and does a good job in the run game.
As a senior for the Irish, he had 46 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and forced three fumbles — all of which were career highs. His ceiling is high but since he needs time to develop, he falls to the end of day two which is a plus for Cleveland.
Adding Kareem is a huge help for a team that saw Garrett suspended and Vernon out for six games each. With them not on the field for all 16 games, the Browns were turning to players such as Porter Gustin and Byran Cox, Jr. down the stretch. They want more competition this year and this selection provides that.
