Grading the Cleveland Browns 2019 draft picks
It may surprise some but the grade is A- for this pick, not because Mack Wilson was great but for a fifth-round pick he was a great value.
Wilson was expected to back up Christian Kirksey but when he got injured in week two Wilson became a starter. He was active in all 16 games and was second on the team with 82 tackles.
Expectations were slightly higher than usual for Wilson than normal for a fifth-round pick because he went to Alabama who has a history of good linebackers and he showed flashes of that this season.
He made plays in pass coverage breaking up seven passes and getting an interception. He can improve against the run and get a little stronger so he doesn’t miss as many tackles but he has a good chance to be the starter again in 2020.
Wilson also left college a year early so he’s only 21, he has time to get better and he will continue getting bigger. He’s smart and has the chance to grow into a really good player.
He will likely be the leader of the linebacker group this season as Schobert signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Kirksey with the Green Bay Packers. Wilson will have to prove himself in that role before his teammates embrace it.
This pick earns an A grade. It’s extremely risky to draft a kicker but in this case, it appears to have paid off for Cleveland.
Austin Seibert made 25-of-29 field-goal attempts and 30 out of 35 extra-point attempts which is a great improvement for the Browns who have struggled to find a placekicker the past few years.
He didn’t miss a field goal under 40 yards making all 18 of his attempts. His scoring was valuable to an offense that struggled to put the ball in the endzone. He also played all 16 games which is a good value for any position.
Seibert was good in college as well and was a teammate of Baker Mayfield at Oklahoma. Kickers have been up and down in the NFL recently so it may be too early to say but Siebert looks like a reliable option for years to come.
