The Cleveland Browns signed Jack Conklin to take Chris Hubbard’s job and he decided to take a pay cut to stick around as the team’s swing tackle

Say what you will about Chris Hubbard‘s play on the field over the past two seasons, but he showed that he can be a team player for the Cleveland Browns. After seeing Jack Conklin signed to take his job this offseason, it appeared the writing was on the wall for the 2018 free-agent addition.

However, Hubbard never ended up being released as many expected. Now, it’s apparent why as he agreed to take a reduced salary to stay with the Browns — where he will assumedly take on the role of the swing tackle.

That position is an important one as this player is often the only true tackle on the bench during game days and has to be ready to play either left or right tackle at a moment’s notice. Hubbard played in this role for the Pittsburgh Steelers which led to him signing a five-year $36.5 million deal.

That story and more can be found in today’s Daily Dawg Tags.

Browns restructure Chris Hubbard’s contract to keep him as a swing tackle — Mary Kay Cabot, Cleveland.com

"“Hubbard was set to make base salaries of $6.15 million in 2020, $6.65 million in 2021 and $7.15 in 2022. Instead, he’s now under contract for two years with a base salary of $2.5 million in 2020, including a $1 million signing bonus, and $1 million guaranteed in 2020.”"

Hubbard took this deal likely knowing that he wasn’t going to get more in free agency. That made it a win-win for him and the team. He still gets a better salary than he would on the open market and they save money while having a backup with a lot of starting experience.

Karl Joseph aims to get physical in Browns secondary — Daryl Ruiter, 92.3 The Fan

"“It’s the most basic thing for me,” Joseph told Bull and Fox Thursday afternoon in an exclusive interview on 92.3 The Fan. “From the beginning when I first started playing this game, I always loved being physical. I loved the physical part of the game and I think that’s what pulled me toward this game was the physical part of it. I always loved hitting people. I wrestled in high school, so I think that also helped with some of my tackling.”"

Karl Joseph’s physicality is reminiscent of what the Browns had with Jabrill Peppers, who they traded away last season in the Odell Beckham, Jr. trade. Having that enforcer can come in handy.

5 things to know about new Browns FB Andy Janovich — Andrew Gribble, ClevelandBrowns.com

"“Janovich is one of the rare players who has experience playing fullback at every level. He was a linebacker and fullback at Gretna High School in Nebraska before joining the University of Nebraska as a walk-on to eventually do the same.”="

When head coach Kevin Stefanski joined the team, he made it clear he wanted a fullback that could help their offense be more physical. He landed a good one in Andy Janovich who will endear himself to fans with his reckless style of play.

5 late-round wide receiver prospects for the Cleveland Browns

The Browns need a wide receiver behind OBJ and Jarvis Landry, but they likely won’t be using an early-round pick on one. With that being the case, Joseph Cantz looks at five players who could be there later in the 2020 NFL Draft.
