One of the biggest changes from previous mocks is the increased stock of safety/linebacker Isaiah Simmons from Clemson. Simmons stock rose to all-time highs after the NFL combine and has continued to rise with film study and interview since. With that, don’t look for the Detroit Lions to pass up the opportunity with defensive-minded head coach Matt Patricia.
Given his six-foot four-inch frame, and 4.39 forty-yard dash time I see Simmons as a safety at the next level even though many have him as a linebacker. Either way given his versatility and flexibility look for Simmons to go earlier than some previously expected.
The Lions will be tempted to go cornerback with Darius Slay departing this offseason but look for those needs to be satisfied later in the draft or via free agency.
The New York Giants need help on defense, but with young quarterback Daniel Jones running for his life last year, look for the Giants going offensive tackle. The tackle class in 2020 is as deep and talented as any, and Nate Solder has not quite lived up to his $15.5 million per year salary expectations.
Tristan Wirfs could be the perfect fit for general manager David Gettleman, as he shined at the combine showing his zone-blocking skills that would pair well with star running back Saquon Barkley. Wirfs is most comfortable at right tackle, which is where he would land with the Giants.
If Simmons would happen to slip to pick no. 4 in the draft, don’t look for Gettleman to let him pass, but Giants fans will be satisfied to see the club solidify the offensive line.
