The draft the Cleveland Browns should have, but probably won’t
Rounds 6 and 7 will carry a very similar theme, defensive linemen who can add depth and help out on special teams. After maximizing their gained assets in the first and second round trades, the Browns are free to take a chance or two on some guys with potential who have fallen to the later rounds.
The first of the players is 2019 second-team All-SEC defensive lineman Rashard Lawrence. It’s a little surprising Lawrence’s draft stock is so low considering his on the field play for the best team in the nation. He missed a small amount of time due to an ankle injury and had knee issues in the spring before his senior season. However, he was a force to reckoned with when on the field. If Lawrence can stay healthy, he’ll likely be a massive steal for the Browns in the sixth round.
The final pick for the Cleveland Browns in the 2020 NFL Draft will be none other than Syracuse defensive end Alton Robinson at 244.
Originally the thought was to go tight end here, but with the developments in Tampa Bay and O.J. Howard becoming available, Cleveland is going to add more depth to defensive end position instead. Robinson is a disruptive force when locked in. However, he was also quite inconsistent in college. He showed great speed and ability at times, which gives an indication of how good he could be if he buckled down and had a disciplined focus on his improvement.
While the Browns may have been able to get him as an undrafted free agent, his upside makes it worth the very slight risk of taking him in the draft. Robinson will have the chance to learn under Myles Garrett, which may make all the difference in his career.
The Cleveland Browns enter the 2020 NFL with a lot of options and a decent amount of draft capital. After years of successful building, the Browns finally have a great base. The offensive side of the ball is especially solid with only depth pieces and a left tackle needed. With this draft, the Browns accomplish all their needs and do so in a cap conscious way.
