Grading the 2017 Cleveland Browns Draft Class
The upside and potential of Deshone Kizer was just too much for Sashi Brown to pass up on. Taking a flier on a quarterback with first-round talent was the thinking behind this pick. And Kizer does have arm talent. He has good arm strength and decent mobility but he was never accurate enough to be an NFL starting quarterback.
Kizer started 15 games for Cleveland his rookie season, something he probably was not ready for, and only completes 53% of his throws. Throwing for 2,894 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions, Kizer was not retained the following season under Johns Dorsey and was traded to Green Bay.
Overall Grade on Kizer is a D
One of three first-round selection by Cleveland in 2017, David Njoku is a very gifted and talented tight end. All his raw talent leaves you wanting more from him, however.
Njoku has started 20 games for the Browns over three seasons and has 93 receptions for 1,066 yards and nine scores. With the additions of Austin Hooper and draft pick Harrison Bryant, the writing is on the wall for Njoku to produce this upcoming season.
The overall grade here is a C
Jabrill Peppers was brought in to be a physically imposing safety for the Browns. However, the lack of having a true free safety forced defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to play Peppers in centerfield, limiting his natural capabilities.
Peppers started 29 games over two seasons while in Cleveland and had 137 tackles and two interceptions. He was traded to the New York Giants as apart of the Odell Beckham deal.
Peppers returned to play more of a strong safety role for the Giants last season and his production jumped with 76 tackles and 5 tackles for a loss in only 11 games.
Overall grade on Peppers is a C +
Myles Garret was a slam dunk, easy No. 1 overall pick for Sashi Brown to make. One of the best pass rushers of his generation, Garrett has not disappointed. In 37 career games for the Browns, Garret has 30.5 sacks, 104 tackles, 32 tackles for a loss and six forced fumbles.
Garrett is well on his way to a Hall of Fame career if he can keep his head on straight following last season’s incident with Pittsburgh.
Overall grade on Garrett is an A
