The Cleveland Browns hired Chad O’Shea this offseason after O’Shea spent one season in Miami, but he has quickly shown what he learned in New England.

Following the Cleveland Browns hiring of Kevin Stefanski as their new head coach this offseason, Stefanski took a deliberate approach to hiring his coaching staff. However, one of the first reported hirings by Stefanski was the addition of Chad O’Shea as the wide receivers coach.

O’Shea had just been let go by the Miami Dolphins after one season as their offensive coordinator. Stefanski had familiarity with O’Shea as he coached three seasons with O’Shea from 2006-2008 in Minnesota.

O’Shea built a solid coaching reputation in Minnesota after being the Vikings wide receivers coach and offensive assistant. Following the 2008 season, O’Shea was hired by the New England Patriots to be the team’s wide receivers coach.

After coaching for 10 seasons in New England and winning three Super Bowl rings, O’Shea is already showing off his roots as a New England coach with the Cleveland Browns.

During the Browns most recent episode of “Building the Browns,” a Zoom session of the rookie Browns wide receivers, led by O’Shea, is shown. In that brief glimpse into the meeting, it shows the no nonsense attitude from O’Shea, as well as his simple expectations he has for the wide receivers.

The short peak into O’Shea’s meeting with the rookie wide receivers shows that O’Shea wants his wide receivers to be giving 100 percent effort no matter what, as well as letting their play on the field do the talking and not running their mouths.

One of the biggest trends from New England coaches is they preach effort and fundamentals while not dealing with a lack of discipline on and off the field. Obviously each coach has their own coaching style after departing New England, but former Patriot coaches typically have the same football values instilled in them from their time working with Bill Belichick.

It will be interesting to see how O’Shea’s style of coaching will coexist with Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry once the team is able to meet at the team facility and work out. New England is not known for having superstar wide receivers on their roster, so the mentality from the players O’Shea coached could possibly different from what he will be working with in Cleveland.

It should be noted that O’Shea did coach Randy Moss for a season and a half at the start of his tenure coaching for the Patriots, so he may have quickly gained an understanding of how to work with receivers who are considered to be one of the top receivers in the NFL and can have a big personality.

Beckham and Landry are not known to be troublemakers within the locker room and have shown great work ethic on the field. However, sometimes personalities do not always mesh and can create some sort of disconnect.

O’Shea will have an opportunity to coach a tremendously talented group of wide receivers in Cleveland. With what he learned from his time in New England, O’Shea could make the Browns wide receiver group one of the best performing units in the NFL.
