Cleveland Browns may not be the favorites to sign Jadeveon Clowney after all.
Who does Jadeveon Clowney think he is? Clowney was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft, a miserable evening if you identify yourself with the Cleveland Browns organization.
He has since been traded from the Houston Texans, who clearly didn’t want to pay him, to the Seattle Seahawks, where he played last season. Now, he’s without a job. He’s appeared in three Pro Bowls, the NFL’s official popularity contest, since being drafted.
Yahoo! Sports insider Charles Robinson appeared on the Pat McAfee Show on Memorial Day, where he declared the Browns as front-runners to sign Clowney.

Adding Clowney to a defensive front starring Myles Garrett and co-starring underrated Olivier Vernon, Sheldon Richardson and Larry Ogunjobi would definitely give the Browns a massive jolt up front. Clowney’s impact as a pass rusher would alleviate some constraint from Cleveland’s underwhelming linebacker corps.
But Clowney has been extremely hesitant to ink a deal in Cleveland, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who appeared on The Next Level on ESPN Cleveland with Emmett Golden and Je’Rod Cherry on Wednesday.
Schefter stated the Browns have been the most financially aggressive team in the Clowney sweepstakes. Schefter was unsure why Clowney continually “balked” on opportunities to sign with the Browns.
"“I think he’s been hesitant to go because if he wasn’t, he would’ve gone already because it’s the most money. It’s the richest offer on the table and he hasn’t taken it. So why is that? Is it that he doesn’t want to play in the city of Cleveland? Is it a lack of belief in the organization?” – Schefter on ESPN Cleveland"
Schefter wasn’t sure what was the cause of Clowney’s hesitation, but ESPN’s top NFL insider was adamant the Browns had offered more money than any other team.
The Browns have seemed to be in the running for Clowney since he somewhat mysteriously became one of the best players still available. Obviously, that interest has upheld as the Browns are once again the NFL Cap Space Champions, looking to spend some of that hoarded cash on a solid, proven talent.
So, what’s Clowney waiting for?
We’re in the midst of a global pandemic. It’s not like he’s on vacation. It’s not like he’s waiting to discuss this with family and friends. We all have Zoom now, don’t we? The Seahawks are probably done entertaining these holdout negotiation antics.
It’s probably a one-year “prove it” deal for a player entering his seventh season and hasn’t proven much of anything in terms of deserving a gigantic contract. Sign your name on the page and get your bags packed, head to Berea and let’s roll.
