So, Browns fans, what does it all mean?

What it means, first of all, is that Dawg Pound Daily is going to cover special teams this year and every year. There will be plenty of articles about Baker Mayfield and Myles Garrett and the stars of the team, but we are also going to go into the details of putting together special teams, figuring out the details of the salary cap and really diving into the nitty-gritty designed for hardcore fans who really want a deep dive into the team and process of building and managing it.

Special teams is not just kicking field goals, punting the ball and running the ball back. There is also a neglected art form associated with the Cleveland Browns kick and punt coverage units. They deserve additional attention.

It also means that the Browns have a very good special teams coach in Mike Priefer. He got special team squads to play in a tough, professional manner in only one year despite having very young talent.

It means special teams were pretty good last year and will improve this year, even though we don’t foresee the next Josh Cribbs on the current roster. What the Browns do have is a number of intriguing candidates that will help the special teams squads to improve.

It means that the Scottish Hammer, Jamie Gillan, is a legit international star; at least that is what is being predicted for him here. This kid can kick the hell out of a football, but he can also steer it rugby style like no one else can. This fan predicts that the Browns will cash in on Gillan’s special abilities once or twice this year.

It means that the Browns have several players who are very good at covering kick returns and punt returns. These defensive special teams are likely to be in the Top-5 this year.

In the interest of full disclosure, last year was the first time that this fan was optimistic about the team since the days of Derek Anderson and Romeo Crennel. We drank the Kool-Aid, only to gag on the team’s performance. Nevertheless, this is still a talented team. This fan is drinking the Kool-Aid again this year.

It really does look like a solid team this year. If it does not work out, well, they play a new season every year.

But this year it is going to work out.
