The Daily Dawg Tags brings you all the Cleveland Browns news you need to know, including Joe Woods building an accumulation of the best defenses.

The Cleveland Browns hiring of Joe Woods as defensive coordinator has created some excitement considering he is coming from the staff that led arguably the best defense in the league last season.

Woods is an experienced defensive coach who has accumulated knowledge from being on solid defensive staffs over the past several years. It has allowed him to pick the brains of some great defensive minds, including Wade Phillips.

Having worked with some great defensive minds, it has allowed Woods to figure out the schemes that work best to slow down a defense. Especially after learning from his two seasons as a defensive coordinator in 2017 and 2018, Woods should be more prepared for the role.

Joe Woods confident Browns defense will ’cause problems’ for opponents – Anthony Poisal, ClevelandBrowns.com

"“I feel like I have been on some good defensive staffs the last couple years,” Woods said. “What I am really putting together is a combination of what I feel like has been the top defenses of the last 10 years. I feel like it’s going to be a really good defensive package where the guys can play fast, but I think it will cause some problems for offenses.”"

Over the past decade, most of the top defenses have come from Seattle with the Cover 3 defensive scheme. Although the defense eventually lost its luster, its impact has still proven to be effective, especially last season with the San Francisco 49ers. It would not be surprising if Woods’ defense has a great resemblance to the defense that grew popular in Seattle.

If Kevin Stefanski can’t turn around Baker Mayfield — who is ‘way more talented’ than Kirk Cousins — Browns are in trouble – Frank Schwab, Yahoo! Sports

"The potential is there with Mayfield too. The Browns have a notoriously rough time finding a franchise quarterback. Mayfield’s 2018 season gave everyone hope. His 2019 season brought about a lot of concern. If Stefanski can unlock what worked in 2018 and get Mayfield back to that level, it’ll make the rest of his job a lot easier."

Kevin Stefanski has the perfect scheme for Baker Mayfield, which is a reason there is so much confidence in Mayfield having a much improved 2020 season. It is a scheme that also helped Kirk Cousins improve during the 2019 season. However, if Mayfield struggles in 2020, the Browns will have some real concerns about the future of the quarterback position.
