Grading Cleveland Browns position groups after free agency and draft
By Clay Goodwin
Quarterbacks: B
The quarterback room for the Browns is slightly above average in the NFL. Baker Mayfield had an incredible rookie season in 2018 when he broke the NFL rookie record for touchdown passes when he threw 27. He surpassed Peyton Manning and Russel Wilson who previously had the record. Mayfield showed why he was the number one pick that year and displayed his talent on the field.

2019 was not so kind to Mayfield and the Browns offense as a whole. Mayfield regressed significantly as he threw for only 22 touchdowns and threw 21 interceptions, which was second highest in the league. Mayfield seemed more inaccurate and had some poor decisions throwing the ball down the field.
Despite a down year, there is great reason Mayfield can come back to the player he was in 2018 and be even better. He was the Heisman Trophy winner and first overall pick for a reason. He was loads of talent and is an extreme competitor.
He has been working all offseason and is working rather than talking. Stefanski’s play-action offense should fit Mayfield’s strengths to perfection. He will be able to roll out in a strong pocket, built behind the new and improved offensive line, and deliver an accurate pass.
The Browns QB room also gets a boosted rating from the new backup Case Keenum. Keenum is one of the better backup QBs in the league this coming season. He has made the NFC championship game with the Vikings a few years ago, with Stefanski as his QB coach.
He provides a serviceable option in case of emergency and can come in and win a game. He also will be a great mentor in this offense for Baker Mayfield.
Overall, the quarterbacks get a B based on Baker’s talent, new system, and Keenum as a reserve.
